Inspired by the movie Julie & Julia

Posted on March 8, 2010 by Sandy

I’ve always had an interest in cooking, and this movie definitely got me thinking. This would be kind of a good project for me. I wont go to the extreme and cook 500+ recipes, but maybe a recipe a week after I’m done my winter semester. I’ll have 4 months of break to do whatever I like.

I talked to my good friend Jamila B about this interesting idea, and she thinks I’ll create a really good fanbase from this. It also gives me a new idea for a blog design, so hopefully I can set that up in the next couple months. Good experience, good fun. What more could I ask for? =)

New Web Layout

Posted on February 13, 2010 by Sandy

Just a couple months ago, I decided my website needed a little face lift. I was a little bored with my old design, so over the Christmas holidays I decided to upgrade to a new design for 2010. Since I’ve been in school for Graphic Design, I have quite a few assignments that I will be adding into my portfolio, so I decided to add an Art Work column to showcase my artistic side. Even though I was a bit surprised that I’ve been doing alot of hand rendering this year, it’s a good to skill to have and a great starting point. Building from the ground up; anyone can go on a computer to create a design, but it takes a real designer to be artistic and creative by hand.

I’ve just added a couple of images into my site, so if you’re reading this check out my site at www.sandyhuynh.com or if you already have. Leave a comment =)

Always a learning experience..

Posted on October 21, 2009 by Sandy

So, I’ve been doing some freelancing and its just been a learning experience for me. I know there are a lot of things that I need to know and I’m learning and picking up things as a go along.

two main issue which I’ve learned is:
Payments I learned from my mistake in the summer, thinking I could trust a client, but in the end it was just my own fault. All those hours I spent doing work for this client and in the end I didnt get my payment.. So, now I live by this rule..ALWAYS get your payments first; either half of it and the other half when you’re done, because as a freelancer you’re the only one looking after yourself and it’s your time spent on a project. Why waste all your time on a project when you wont get paid in the end?

Ask more questions, It’s always good to ask more questions, knowing more about your project the less stress and the less work for you. I learned this the hard way, but then again I wouldn’t have known if it didn’t happen to me. For every project, you should always ask what type of file it is whether it’s a psd file, flash, Ai..etc(updating an existing file or new file) and also before you put a charge on any project, make sure to ask what you are editing and how many things/items are going into this file. You shouldn’t assume, that’s what I’ve learned. ‘Cause in the end it’ll only take up your time and your effort with less money in your pocket.

I’m slowly learning, but one thing I’m starting now is writing down all my mistakes! Its a learning experience and what better way to remember?

Wompen

Cheers!

So good to hear good feedback from others..=)

I just did a web design for my friend Jamila, she is an up and coming singer in hamilton and a long time friend of mine. You can check out her site on my website under web work. I designed it and collaborated with Darcy Voutt who did the wordpress/back-end coding for her site. I’m happy she likes the design, and i’ve been hearing from her that alot of other people like it as well..which makes me Oh SO HAPPY..=)!!

Hopefully I will be getting more freelance work while im in school..going back in two weeks..Very excited!!

Cheers!!

Freelance Beginners?

Posted on July 3, 2009 by Sandy

Some of you may not know, but im currently doing some freelancing on the side while im heading back to school in 2 months, I found this neat site where you can organize all your invoices for freelance work, or anyone who has a start up business and dont have all the software or people to do there invoices. The site is called fresh books, and you basically add all your info on it yourself, including your projects, what i really like about freshbooks is for every project/invoice you make, you can set a tab where you can write the things you’ve done for your client, which i like. And this site is totally free if you have under 5 clients, which is good if you’re just starting up.

so here’s the site:  http://www.freshbooks.com/?ref=459

should check it out!

Best site ever

Posted on July 3, 2009 by Sandy

This site is so helpful, anyone who needs some pointers on web designing this is a good site to get some helpful tips and tricks. They have all video tutorials so its better than reading your instructions, which i tend to find annoying..they show you step by step how to create ex. wordpress templates, how to create rounded corners in css..etc..great site!..check it out..=)

cheers
